Super sire Zabeel is closing in on the record of his own sire Sir Tristram with Zabeelionaire becoming his 42nd individual Group One winner.
The Leon Corstens-trained Zabeelionaire held off Sabrage to win Saturday’s South Australian Derby with Zabeel now just three short of Sir Tristram who also stood at Sir Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud in New Zealand.
At 25, Zabeel is still an active stallion and stands for $NZ100,000 ($A78,693).
Zabeel produced champion three-year-old Octagonal from his first crop and lists other luminaries such as Might And Power, Efficient, Mouawad and Savabeel among his offspring.
The stallion is now in line for his 15th Dewar Award for the most prizemoney won in Australasia by a New Zealand-based sire.
