Speed filly Solar Charged looks set to force favourite Hay List to chase in Sunday’s Group Two Challenge Stakes.

Trainer John O’Shea is delighted with Solar Charged who will be suited by the 1000 metres around Warwick Farm where she has won the Kindergarten Stakes and finished second in the Silver Shadow Stakes.

Hulking sprinter Hay List is the $1.70 favourite for the weight-for-age sprint at his first start since he was scratched on the eve of the Newmarket Handicap due to soreness in his off-side shoulder.

O’Shea respects Hay List but is just concentrating on his filly going out and doing what she does best – go fast.

“We can’t worry about Hay List,” O’Shea said.

“If he turns up and produces his best he’s going to be hard to beat, but he has had a few issues which have been well documented.

“If he turns up and runs his best he’ll be hard to beat but if he doesn’t he’ll probably struggle because I know Solar Charged is going well.”

O’Shea said Solar Charged would adopt her usual tactics and get out and get running.

“She likes to do that,” O’Shea said.

“She’s going well. Her two runs in Melbourne were very good and she just tries her heart out all day long.”

O’Shea won the race two years ago with another three-year-old filly in Olonana and said the Challenge Stakes was always a good option for Solar Charged.

“Three-year-old fillies have a good record in the race having won two of the past three,” the trainer said.

“I won it with Olonana and Solar Charged has got a better record than Olonana had.”

Solar Charged has raced twice so far this preparation finishing third in the Group Three Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield first-up and then a game fifth in the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at her most recent start.

After the Challenge Stakes, O’Shea is hoping to give the filly another Group One chance in The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick next month.

“Her father (Charge Forward) won it and I’d like to run her in it too,” O’Shea said.

Solar Charged is the $4.80 second favourite in the Challenge Stakes in a field of seven.
