The Group One-winning combination of jockey Michael Rodd and Gold Trail will be reunited on Saturday in the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield.

The pair teamed up to win last year’s Railway Stakes in New Zealand but Rodd hasn’t been aboard the Gary Portelli-trained sprinter in his two starts since he finished down the track in the 2010 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Craig Newitt rode Gold Trail first-up this campaign when he led and was overpowered in the straight, finishing fifth to Secret Flyer in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

“I don’t like making excuses but he should have been going a bit faster (in the lead),” Portelli said.

“He probably just cuddled him a bit too much and everything had a chance to beat him from behind.

“Michael Rodd gets back on in the Bletchingly at Caulfield. He knows the horse and what he’s capable of.”

The Sir John Monash was Gold Trail’s first start in Melbourne and Portelli reported his charge had come through the experience well.

The Warwick Farm horseman has also welcomed back talented three-year-old Somepin Anypin.

The lightly-raced gelding won three of his five starts last preparation and was spelled after finishing ninth to Ilovethiscity in the Group Two Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in February.

“He’s been in pre-training at his owner’s place for about six weeks,” Portelli said.

“He will be back for the end of the Sydney spring and then hopefully into the Melbourne carnival.

“He is still a restricted grade horse and he needs to earn his stipes to get his rating up so he can get into some of the good races.”

Meanwhile, John O’Shea is continuing his spring build up, confirming Golden Slipper placegetter Elite Falls is on track to barrier trial in the coming weeks.

Stablemate Foxwedge was an impressive trial winner at Randwick last Tuesday ahead of his resumption in the San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 13.

Elite Falls is also coming along nicely according to her trainer.

“She will probably trial in the next few weeks. I’ll just give her the one trial and she’ll go first-up into the Silver Shadow,” O’Shea said.

The Group Three Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) is at Warwick Farm on August 20.
